Adult Foster Care, also known as Adult Family Care, is a compassionate program where trained, compensated caregivers open their homes to individuals who need daily support. Participants—called “AFC Members”—receive personalized care in a shared living environment, unlike the sterile feel of institutional care.
👥 Who Is Eligible for AFC?
AFC is designed for individuals 16 years or older (18+ in Massachusetts) who:
- Cannot live alone safely due to physical, cognitive, or mental health needs
- Require support with one or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, mobility, transferring
- Live with a caregiver (not a spouse or legal guardian), and don’t require continuous skilled nursing
Members must be referred by a physician, and the caregiver and member live together, forming a trusting, home-like bond.
